Refining the Ashtanga Primary Series
with Linda Munro
A 4-Class Live Progressive Series + Replays
+ 8 Pre-recorded Sessions & Workbook
This live series is designed for practitioners who know at a portion of the Primary Series and want to refine how they move through it.
We will explore the Primary Series as a practice of moving prāṇāyāma — where breath leads, steadiness stabilises, and ease is cultivated within effort. Across four progressive classes, we gradually build the sequence from its foundations to the full arc, refining not just alignment, but the inner experience of sthira and sukha.
Rather than pushing for depth or performance, the emphasis is on continuity of breath, intelligent pacing, and the capacity to remain steady and receptive as intensity increases. As the sequence expands each week, you will develop greater sensitivity to how prāṇa moves through the practice — learning where to ground, where to soften, and how to sustain clarity from the first Sun Salute to the final rest.
This is an invitation to experience the Primary Series not simply as a sequence of postures, but as an integrated breathing meditation in motion.
Between live classes, you’ll follow the accompanying pre-recorded program, Build an Ashtanga Practice – for a Body That Lasts, creating a complete immersion in both the precision and progressive development of the Primary Series.
This course is suitable for all levels of practitioners!
Program
Live classes Sunday, 16:30
September 13 & 27, October 18 and November 1, 2026.
Class 1 — Establishing Steady Flow
Sunday, September 13th, 16h30 – 18h00
*plus time for Q & A at end
Breathing meditation in movement
Sequence:
• Breath & Bandha Focus
• Sun Salutations
• Full Standing Sequence
• Beginning of Seated
• Baby Back Bend & Legs Up
• Seated Finishing Poses
Focus:
• Establishing consistent ujjayi rhythm
• Coordinating breath and movement without rush
• Finding structural steadiness (sthira) in standing postures
• Softening unnecessary effort while maintaining integrity
Intention:
To experience the early arc of the series as a breathing practice first. We refine how we enter, hold, and transition — cultivating stability without rigidity and effort without strain.
Class 2 — Steady Within Intensity
Sunday, September 27th, 16h30 – 18h00
*plus time for Q & A at end
Breath Through Increasing Intensity (to Supta Kurmasana)
Sequence:
• Standing with greater continuity
• Seated sequence through Supta Kurmasana
• Baby Back Bend & Legs Up
• Seated Finishing Poses
Focus:
• Maintaining even breath as shapes deepen
• Containing energy rather than dispersing it
• Working with challenge while preserving sukha
• Allowing prāṇāyāma to stabilise the nervous system
Intention:
As intensity increases, steadiness becomes subtler. The work is to remain internally spacious while the external demand grows.
Class 3 — Ease Within Effort
Sunday, October 18th, 16h30 – 18h15
*plus time for Q & A at end
Adding the Finishing Sequence
Sequence:
• Standing Sequence with Flow
• Seated sequence through Supta Kurmasana
• Backbending + full Finishing Sequence
Focus:
• Breath rhythm in backbending
• Avoiding breath-holding under effort
• Rebalancing the system through inversions
Intention:
To experience how the series rises and resolves. Sthira becomes endurance; sukha becomes the ability to regulate and return.
Class 4 — Full Flow Integration
Sunday, November 1st, 16h30 – 18h30
*plus time for Q & A at end
Full Primary Series
Sequence:
• Complete Primary Series
Focus:
• Unbroken breath awareness
• Efficient transitions
• Energetic coherence across the full arc
• Personal pacing for sustainability
Intention:
To practise the Primary Series as a unified prāṇāyāma meditation in motion — steady, easeful, and internally connected from beginning to end.
