Curious about 3rd Series, but think it’s out of reach? It’s not.

I’m really looking forward to this upcoming workshop in Paris. We’ll be diving into the 3rd Series—but don’t let that scare you off. You don’t need to already be practicing 3rd Series to join. This is really about learning how to work toward advanced postures—by understanding the foundations, and how those same actions carry forward as the postures evolve. That’s the heart of this work I’ll be showing you how the complex poses of 3rd Series are actually built from the same ingredients we use in Primary and Intermediate. Once you see the connections, it opens everything up. We’ll use modifications, steps, props, drills—so it becomes possible for each person to engage with the material in practical and fun ways. You can be an intermediate student—or even a newer student who’s adventurous and curious. You just need a passion for learning and a willingness to embrace a good challenge. We’ll also connect the physical work to breath, bandhas, and deeper aspects of the practice—because the goal is integration, not just performance.

So if you’ve been wondering whether it’s too advanced—

it’s not.

If ready to explore, I’d love to work with you.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
  • How to use the 7 Asana Principles to create natural connections between foundational poses and complex 3rd Series postures.
  • Safe, creative approaches to asana practice, utilizing steps, modifications, and drills that align with your current abilities.
  • The integration of asana work with yoga philosophy, evolving your practice on and off the mat.

Dynamic Vinyasa Dimension of Ashtanga Yoga

This special class will take an in-depth look at the vinyasa of Ashtanga Yoga will focus on how proper vinyasa knowledge extends beyond memorizing the number of positions of the asana; you are also meant to know the vinyasa positions dynamically within your body. There is a great art to understanding the subtle progressions of movement that bring you into and out of each asana, exploring this refinement is what brings you into readiness, poise, beauty and alignment in your postures. We’ll look at how such vinyasa knowledge helps you understand how to refine your awareness and to learn to see the practice as chiefly dhyana, meditation.

ABOUT DAVID: Since 1991, David has maintained an enthusiastic daily personal practice that is dedicated to āsana and Prāṇāyāma study in the Ashtanga tradition. His intense commitment to practice and to teaching inspires his students who form a diverse, soulful, open-hearted, and serious global learning community.

David was introduced to yoga at the age of sixteen when a friend taught him the classic set of postures known as Sūrya Namaskāra (Sun Salutations). David maintained a self-taught practice for more than a decade before everything changed when he met Marie Svoboda, Seattle’s “grand dame of yoga” in 1991. Attending her classes lit an everlasting fire for yoga in him and he immersed himself in a blazing, resolute study of yoga. During this time David also had the great fortune to study intensively with senior BKS Iyengar teacher Aadil Palkhivala attending weekly classes and participating in many intensives and teacher trainings.

David met Pattabhi Jois in 1993 and over the next two decades he traveled to Mysore, India to study at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute. In 1996, Pattabhi Jois granted David a teaching certificate; David is among a small group of Ashtanga Yoga teachers who received a teaching certificate directly from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. David returned to Seattle and opened the first-ever Ashtanga Yoga studio there.

David now lives in Philadelphia and is an internationally recognized yoga teacher and creator of the Āsana Kitchen video instruction series, one of the leading online yoga learning resources on YouTube. David travels extensively throughout the US, Europe, and India offering workshops, in-depth studies and retreats. He has numerous online courses and is the author of many books including, Vāyu Siddhi: Secrets of Yogic Breathing, Maps and Musings: Writings that Celebrate Haṭha Yoga and the Quest for Self Knowledge, Ecstatic Discipline: 46 Poems for Lovers of Hatha Yoga, Teaching Yoga With Verbal Cues, and Ashtanga Yoga Vinyāsa.

David’s mission is to help students of yoga flourish within the living, contemporary lineage of Ashtanga Yoga. He aims to be part of the circle of Haṭha Yoga lovers who are devoted to applying the teachings of Ashtanga Yoga in ways that promote physical, psychological, and spiritual growth in themselves and others.
