PROGRAM

SATURDAY, JAN 29

14:00 – 16:00   Unfolding the Lotus: Hip Opening Session
We often store stress and negative emotions in our hips, giving us a feeling of tightness and discomfort. During this practice, we will focus on opening this area. If we want to have results in opening our hips, we need to find balance between heating the body to enter deep stretches and accepting to be patient in some poses to allow for deep release to happen. We will move through a dynamic heating sequence to stretch hips and thighs first, and then dive into some great hip opening poses breaking them down and holding them longer.

16:30 – 18:30  Yin Yoga ceremony and practice
Yin Yoga is about cultivating a loving kindness attitude towards ourselves and our bodies. It is a practice in which poses are held for a long time (3-5 minutes, or more for Restorative poses) in order to let gravity apply to our connective tissues (tendons, ligaments, fascia). It focuses on creating space around the main joints of our body and stimulates the flow of vital energy in our meridians (energy channels in Chinese Medecine), maintaining health and vitality of the organs. We will create a circle for our Yin/Restorative practice, with music, and support of yoga props to make the journey gentle and soft and let the Healing happen on an energetic and emotional level as well as on the physical level.

SUNDAY, JAN 30

14:00 – 16:00   Backbending in Intermediate series of Ashtanga : Creating new patterns
When we are transitioning from Primary to Intermediate, we must keep integrating the teachings of Primary Series while learning to shift our body awareness from a pattern of « forward bends » to a pattern of « backbends ». This is often a challenging turning point in our practice, and can feel exhausting for many of us.
n this workshop, Sonia will introduce you to the principles of backbending (front body opening !) : how to strengthen the legs and the back for drop backs and Intermediate Series backbends. She will give you advice on how to save your energy and learn to consciously integrate these new patterns.

16:30 – 18:30  Loving-Kindness Meditation & Yoga Nidra Integration
Sonia will close this afternoon and weekend workshop by introducing the principles of Loving-Kindness (Metta Bhavana) Meditation, guide a full Meditation, and finally inviting you to relax to the practice of Yoga Nidra.

Yoga Nidra literally means yogic sleep.  It is an ancient technique where the practitioner enters the deep states of conscious relaxation.  It is a systematic practice of moving awareness from our external world to the inner world. It brings us to a state of deep sleep where our senses, intellect, and mind relax. In the state of Yoga Nidra, we becomes free from the concepts of time, space and reason. When this happens, our brain activity reduces and the body goes into a healing state A 30 minutes practice of Yoga Nidra can give the same benefit of a much longer sleep. As the body enters a healing state, you can clear up the toxins at a cellular level, refresh the mind and remove baggage from the subconscious.

ABOUT

SONIA AMA
Sonia’s first encounter with yoga happened during her studies in the United States when she was 18 years old. After a few years exploring different forms of yoga, she became passionate about Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and since that day dedicates her life to yogic study and practice. She left her International Development career and decided to start teaching Yoga in 2014.
Sonia’s wish is to share the tools that the yoga practice can offer to support each of us on the path of self-transformation and freedom. Starting a personal Mysore style practice is, according to Sonia, the best gift one can offer him/herself.
She met her teachers Linda Munro and Gerald Disse in 2014 and started practicing at Ashtanga Yoga Paris. She did their 200h Yoga Teacher Training and then taught yoga in their beautiful community for three years.
She has been following trainings in Yin Yoga the last two years with Biff Mithoefer and Betty Papadopoulou to combine a more gentle and restorative practice to her Ashtanga classes and share this soft practice of letting go and acceptance with her students. She loves studying Yoga philosophy and has been studying Ayurveda with an Indian Ayurvedic Professor based in Mysore since December 2017. From July 2017 until March 2019, Sonia traveled to India and Bali to practice with experienced Ashtanga teachers that inspire her and deepen her study of yoga. In 2019, she opened a Yoga and Meditation center in Lisbon where she teaches a Mysore program and organizes retreats and workshops all year long.
